DETHATCHER
is a

dethatcher"
for
thatch
build-up.
Thatch
is the
straw-like
accumulation
of old
grass
material
above
the
soil
in your
lawn.
When
thatch
builds
up,
it indicates
your
lawn's
health
is slipping
away.
Thatch
build-up
occurs
in lawns
with
compacted
soils
that
have
usually
been
over
watered
and/or
fertilized.
A deficiency
in earthworm
numbers
from
lack
of humus
may
also
cause
soils
to compact.
Water

sunlight

a hard
time
penetrating
lawns
with
heavy
thatch
build-ups
and
compacted
soil.
Since
moisture
is absorbed
by the
thatch
and
not

soil,

shallow,

Lawns
with
shallow
root
systems
quickly
lose
vigor
in dry
weather.
Insects
use
heavy
thatch
as a
breeding

layers

inch
[6.35mm]
thick
do provide
some
benefit
to your
lawn,
thatch
layers
over
½
inch
[12.7mm]
thick
definitely
require

often

water
well
and
allow
grass
root
systems
to grow
deep.

are

in drought
resistance.
Healthy

retain
their

immunity
to plant
diseases,
and
resist
weed
competition
better
than
chemically
treated
lawns.
