Fall & Winter Tips

Pool Closing for BZT® Aquaculture

When used in swimming pools and spas, BZT® Aquaculture can provide clearer and cleaner water without the need for scrubbing off scum rings. Treatment throughout the swimming season is an all-natural and completely safe way to eliminate body and suntan oils and other organic wastes that make those dreaded scum rings from your water.

We have found that using BZT® Aquaculture at the seasonal closing of your pool provides faster and easier startups next season. One application of BZT® Aquaculture right at pool closing time will break down organic materials in the pool water, reducing cleaning and scrubbing next spring.

At the season closing, treat your pool with 1oz of BZT® Aquaculture for every 3,000 gallons (28.4g/11.4m3). First, dissolve the required amount of BZT® Aquaculture in a bucket of pool water [1oz/gal (28.4g/3.78l)] and then pour around the perimeter of your pool.

Spas

When used in spas, BZT® Pool & Spa Treatment can provide clearer and cleaner water and end the need for scrubbing off scum rings. Treatment is year-round. BZT® Pool & Spa Treatment is an all-natural and completely safe way to eliminate body and suntan oils and other organic wastes from your water. You use your spa year round, so maintain your normal application of BZT® Pool & Spa Treatment year round.

Winterizing Ponds

Continue treating your ponds with BZT® products, following recommended rates until water temperature falls below 50°F. Stop treatment until water temperatures rise back above 50°F.

For our clients keeping Koi we offer the following seasonal reminders, as suggested by many of our clients. For more detailed instructions, consult you local Koi society on winterizing your pond.

Fall

  • Remove as much falling leaves and debris from pond as possible.
  • Clean out settling chambers 2x/week and bio-chambers every 3-4 weeks.
  • When water temperature reaches 60°F, perform a 0.3% salt treatment to attack parasites. Remove salt with routine water changes after two weeks.
  • Begin to feed low protein feed when water temperatures fall to 56°F. Stop feeding when water temperature falls below 46°F.
  • Continue monitoring pH, alkalinity, and ammonia every week.

Winter

  • Stop feeding when water temperature falls below 46°F.
  • Water should be drawn from the top of the pond by the pump.
  • Periodically check and clean filtration system.
  • Continue to monitor pH, alkalinity, and ammonia.
  • Keep leaves and debris from entering pond.
  • Monitor filtration/circulation systems and prevent freezing, which can damage parts.
  • Disconnect, drain, and clean UV filter. Store in a protected area until spring.

Aquariums

How is your aquarium doing? Is the water clear? Are you experiencing problems with high ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites; what about scum, sludge, and other unsightly solids floating around in the tank, clogging filters, or covering surfaces? If you are using BZT® Aqua 4-U as recommended, these problems are a thing of the past. If you're not using BZT® Aqua 4-U, what are you waiting for? Contact us for further information on how we can help you maintain optimum water quality and clarity and greatly reduce the time and work involved in maintaining your aquarium.

Septic Systems, Drainlines, and Grease traps

The holiday seasons can create a lot of stress on septic and drainlines systems. All that extra cooking and cleaning; guests using the restroom (not to mention those relatives that come for a few days and end up staying for a few weeks); and cooler temperatures can put a heavy strain on your drainlines and septic systems. Now is the time to get these systems in optimum shape and keep them that way throughout the season using BZT® Drainline, Disposal, & Septic Treatment. Check out our web site to learn how regular maintenance can benefit you.

For extreme conditions or industrial applications, try BZT® Waste Digester. This industrial-strength product is perfect for maintaining drainlines, grease traps, and septic systems in hotels, restaurants, apartments, and similar locations.

Lawn Dethatching

Fall applications of BZT® Dethatcher should have been applied by now, except for those lucky enough to be in warmer climates. Do not apply BZT® Dethatcher if ground temperature is expected to fall below 50°F within the next few weeks. Wait until next season when ground temperatures are consistently above 50°F to apply the BZT® Dethatcher.

Composting

Fall creates a heavy burden on composting as temperatures cool, moisture falls, plants die, and leaves fall. Don't forget to monitor and maintain your compost pile's moisture level during this time. Larger pile dimensions will help your pile maintain warmer temperatures. Input of high carbon wastes (leaves, fibrous materials) needs to be balanced with high nitrogen materials (grass, manure, fertilizer) in order to maintain optimum carbon:nitrogen ratios. For best results, shred or mulch leaves, twigs, stalks, etc. before adding BZT® Compost Activator to compost piles.

Wastewater Lagoons

Just because its cold outside doesn't mean you have to stop treating your wastewater lagoon with BZT® products. Industrial, Agricultural, and Municipal wastewater lagoons are often treated during winter months as the constant influent of warm water keeps temperatures high enough for biological activity to continue. This will be especially true down in the sludge blanket on the bottom of the lagoon or in lagoons with an insulating grease cap.

Industrial/Commercial Floor Cleaning

Don't forget the benefits of BZT® products for cleaning floors in industrial facilities where oil, grease, and other organic contaminants have built up over the years. Restaurants and automotive repair facilities utilize routine cleaning procedures with our products to keep floor surfaces clean and non-slippery. Heavily contaminated floors are cleaned using a combination of BZT® Waste Digester and BZT® Xtra-Wet, while lightly contaminated surfaces may require BZT® Xtra-Wet alone.

Attention Machine Shops

The doors are closing. Tramp oils contaminating your machine coolants? If so get ready for complaints. Smoke, health concerns, and odor complaints always rise this time of year as machine shop doors close to keep winter's chill outside. You could replace the coolant more frequently to keep these problems under control, but we have a better idea. You can treat the coolant right in the sump with OBT® Oil Degradation Treatment and get rid of tramp oils and all the problems they create.

Fogged Mirrors, Windows, Eyeglasses

Can't see where you're going. Fogging mirrors, windows, and eyeglasses can be a constant problem during winter. Users of BZT® Jewelry Cleaner have reported other uses for this product, among which is as an anti-fogging cleaner for glass surfaces. Simply clean these surface using BZT® Jewelry Cleaner and polish dry.

Holiday crystal lost that sparkle? Another reported use for BZT® Jewelry Cleaner is to bring back the shine your holiday crystal lost due to oils from handling.
