Biological Treatment SummaryBatu Caves

United-Tech’s products are used in thousands of projects every year.  Most are routine, involving industrial wastewater, aquaculture, and home applications.  Every now and then we, or one of our distributors, become involved in something unique.  One such project that was different, or at least very interesting, was conducted by our distributor in Malaysia.

The Situation

Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia draws over a million visitors and pilgrims during the Thaipusam Festival weekend.  During this festival, devotees climb the 272 stairs leading to a temple, performing rites of penance and many offering gifts of milk.  Over the years, these throngs of people overtax the facility's wastewater system.  Another issue is the milk carried up the stairs and poured into a collection vessel which then drains back down the mountain to the wastewater collection system.  Needless to say, spilled milk and a tropical climate do not agree.  These issues, coupled with dropped food and spilled beverages by the visitors created a significant odor issue for the attendees to endure.

The Solution

In 2007 , the festival planners tried something new.  A treatment program was initiated using BZT® Waste Digester.  During the festival, workers walked the festival grounds, spraying a BZT® Waste Digester solution over contaminated areas, into the milk-collection system, and on bathroom floors.  Drainline treatment was also performed immediately before and during the festival.

The Results

Festival planners reported a great reduction in odors, making the festival a much more pleasant experience for those attending.  Odor reduction was especially noticed in the milk collection tank and disposal lines where in previous years very strong offensive odors were encountered.  Unlike previous years; this time, "there was no use in crying over spilled milk!"
